For a large US advertiser, the ability to analyze data about internet users’ response to advertisements is crucial to business success. Timely analysis of clickstream data permits accurate evaluation of online campaign performance, which in turn enables well-informed deci- sions about future marketing efforts. However, as the number of users being reached by the company’s campaigns increases, the volume of clickstream data they need to analyze has begun to grow beyond the processing capacity of their traditional relational database systems. The company urgently required a new solution to prepare, store and man- age the steadily increasing amounts of data they were collecting about campaign performance.

After evaluating a number of alternatives, the company chose a SAND solution over other products using traditional RDBMS technology. SAND Data Transform ELT and SAND software, were implemented to process, store and manage 50 terabytes of data and to facilitate the delivery of information online. The reasons cited for this decision included SAND’s excellent data load and query performance, as well as its high rates of data compression. The company is now able to store up to two years’ worth of massaged and denormalized data in a readily accessible format.
