Case Study
Siemens AG ranks as one of the world’s leaders in the field of electrotechnology and electronics. For about five years now, Siemens’ Drive Technologies and Industry Automation division has been relying on SAP Business Information Warehouse (SAP BW) as their central reporting system. Over time, applications were implemented on this system, which grew continuously as a result. Not able to delete any data from individual applications due to the possibility that they might need it again, Siemens went looking for a solution.
The decision was made to implement the SAND/DNA nearline solution from SAND Technology due to the high rates of compression. The software is capable of reducing the volume of data by 95% which means Siemens is able to work in completely new ways. The SAND/DNA solution is thus much more cost-effective and makes it easier to store, manage and secure large amounts of data. Extremely fast access to data was another crucial factor in the decision.
“Users don’t even notice whether they are working in the main system or accessing the nearline data. Data that is no longer needed can be moved offline – but, thanks to the extremely high rates compression provided by SAND/DNA, continuing to store this data nearline is not a problem,” — Hartmut Koch of the Siemens Drive Technologies and Industry Automation IT department.
