Case Study
Atos Origin is a leading European systems integration consulting company, charged with providing analytics on a complex set of railway transportation billing data for the UK Rail Settlement Plan (RSP).
Challenge
Atos Origin's mandate was to keep 10 years' worth of data and perform the analytics necessary to understand what should be cross-charged amongst the associated facility owners. Data for the most recent 401 days was to reside online, while all older data had to be archived and ready for quick restoration if requested. It was estimated that with a traditional warehouse close to 15 TB of storage would be required over the period of the contract.
Solution
A SAND/DNA solution was set up to automatically archive all billing data older than 401 days in SAND DNA/Access, resulting in a footprint that was 5% of the raw data size. Users who need access to the older data submit their request to the system, which extracts the required data set and loads it into SAND DNA/Analytics, where it is available for high-performance analytics for a specified period. With this solution, the projected size of the archive over the contract period has been reduced to 700 GB.
